The Matarese Circle by Robert Ludlum – Average Guy Review

The Matarese Circle is an outstanding novel written by the late, great Robert Ludlum, who is  best known for the Jason Bourne books.  The premise of the book is that a shadowy group known as The Matarese have infiltrated world governments to the highest levels and are preparing a takeover of the most powerful nations in the world.  The only two men who can stop them are two spies, one Russian and one American, who have vowed to kill each other.  The two men must join forces in order to save the world from tyranny.

I found this book to be an extremely interesting read and the best Ludlum novel that I have read so far.  It is full of rich settings, mystery, intrigue, inner demons, rich characters, and action.  It is a good blend of a spy and suspense novel and has a very interesting premise.  I also very much enjoyed the way that the characters traced the roots of the fictional Matarese and learned their history, which was fascinating.

I would highly recommend this book to any action/suspense fans.  If you are looking to pick up one of Ludlum`s many books, The Matarese Circle would be a great place to start.  Also, this book is going to be made into a major film in 2010 starring Denzel Washington and Tom Cruise (rumored).
