Publisher’s Weekly stated that author John C. Boland “excels in rendering epiphanies.” And his new novel, Hominid, is no exception as it explores evolution, genetics, archaeology, and a centuries-old mystery.

Evolution is Deadly. Archaeologist David Isaac joins a team excavating a crypt on a remote island where a colonial-era family lies buried. By local lore, the family were “devils.” The expedition’s leader hopes to revive his career by proving they were murdered by neighbors in a burst of religious hysteria. But these cadavers harbor an older and deadlier secret–evidence that a new humanoid species has emerged.

For this month’s BIG THRILL, I had the great opportunity to interview David Levien…

Lee Child proclaimed David Levien to be a “must-read thriller writer,” and David’s work has been described as “Violent and compelling, with the flavour of Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch, this is American thriller writing at its rocket-fuelled, roller-coaster best.” David has written three books featuring retired detective, Frank Behr, but he is also well known for his screenplay and directorial work on such popular Hollywood productions as Ocean’s Thirteen, Rounders, Knockaround Guys, Walking Tall, and Runaway Jury.

In the newest book in the series, 13 Million Dollar Pop, Frank Behr is on an executive protection detail for Bernard “Bernie Cool” Kolodnik, a hard-driving real estate mogul on the verge of making a move into big-time Indiana politics, when it all goes wrong in a chaotic burst of automatic weapons fire.

Behr has been working for the Caro Group, an exclusive “white-shoe” private investigation and security firm, and finds it an uncomfortable fit, both literally and philosophically. But with his girlfriend, Susan, pregnant and near her due date, Behr has had to put his private detective lifestyle on hold in order to make a salary.

Now with his white-collar stability rocked by the attempt on the prominent client’s life, Behr can‘t help but investigate what happened—and question why the Indianapolis Police Department seems to be burying the incident. Navigating a labyrinthine landscape of hardened former feds, crooked real estate developers, casino magnates, and power seekers feeding on the edge of a dangerous political scheme, Behr goes head-to-head with a cold-blooded assassin who is more terrifying than anything ever seen in Indianapolis.

REVIEW — Life in Review Blog: “The Shepherd by Ethan Cross is one of the best thrillers I have read in a long time! It’s an intense thrill ride you won’t believe!…I VERY highly recommend this book! It is very well written and the story is unique and full of fabulous twists! The characters are really great. I hated and feared the villain, and I rooted for the hero and loved his character! I was truly amazed by all the twists and I couldn’t help but think about the wonderful author. Fabulous story and fantastic writing, but dude, seriously twisted!” — Click here to read the full review »

For this month’s BIG THRILL, I interviewed Rick Mofina about his new book, In Desperation…

Rick Mofina began writing fiction in grade school. At age 15, he sold his first short story to a magazine, and while still in his teens, he hitchhiked to California and wrote a novel about the experience. He continued down this path and became a reporter, covering stories ranging from serial killers to armored car heists. Eventually, he poured this myriad of interesting experiences into becoming a novelist that has been described as “one of the leading thriller writers of the day” with #1 New York Times bestselling author Brad Thor pronouncing his latest book to be “A superbly written thriller that plumbs the depths of every parent’s nightmare. Timely, tense, and terrifying, this book is sure to be a big hit!”

IN DESPERATION is book #3 in the acclaimed series featuring crime reporter Jack Gannon. The series was launched with VENGEANCE ROAD, which was named a Thriller Award Finalist by the International Thriller Writers and a Shamus Award Finalist by the Private Eye Writers of America.

IN DESPERATION is the story of 11-year-old Tilly Martin who is dragged from her suburban Phoenix bedroom at night by two men posing as police officers. Her mother Cora pleads for mercy but the kidnappers are clear: if they don’t get $5 million in five days, Tilly dies. If anyone contacts police, Tilly dies.

Journalist Jack Gannon’s estranged sister, Cora, vanished decades ago. Now she is frantically reaching out to him for help. Cora tells him about the shameful mistakes she’s made—but she guards the one secret that may be keeping her daughter alive.

In the U.S. and Mexico, police and the press go flat out on Tilly’s case. But as Gannon digs deeper into his anguished sister’s past, the hours tick down on his niece’s life.

REVIEW — Confessions of a Real Librarian had this to say: “I was hooked from page 1, the action started immediately. And it didn’t let up! There were twists and turns that I totally wasn’t expecting – a great asset for a thriller!” and “I didn’t want to put it down. Both of the main characters had story lines that were very captivating.” — Click here for more info »

For this month’s BIG THRILL, I interviewed Paul McEuen about his new book, SPIRAL, and his work in the field of nanotechnology…

When Nobel laureate Liam Connor is found dead at the bottom of one of Ithaca, New York’s famous gorges, his research collaborator, Cornell professor of nanoscience Jake Sterling, refuses to believe it was suicide. Why would one of the world’s most eminent biologists, a eighty-six-year old man in good health who survived some of the darkest days of the Second World War, have chosen to throw himself off a bridge? And who was the mysterious woman caught on camera at the scene? Soon it becomes clear that a cache of supersophisticated nanorobots—each the size of a spider—has disappeared from the dead man’s laboratory.

Stunned by grief, Jake, Liam’s granddaughter, Maggie, and Maggie’s nine-year-old son, Dylan, try to put the pieces together. They uncover ingeniously coded messages Liam left behind pointing toward a devastating secret he gleaned off the shores of war-ravaged Japan and carried for more than sixty years.

What begins as a quest for answers soon leads to a horrifying series of revelations at the crossroads of biological warfare and nanoscience. At this dangerous intersection, a skilled and sadistic assassin, an infamous Japanese war criminal, and a ruthless U.S. government official are all players in a harrowing game of power, treachery, and intrigue—a game whose winner will hold the world’s fate literally in the palm of his hand.

Paul McEuen is the Goldwin Smith Professor of Physics at Cornell University and Director of the Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science. He is a visionary and pioneer in his chosen field, but now Paul has taken on a new challenge and joined the ranks of published authors. He explodes onto the thriller scene this month with his new novel, Spiral, a book that has been described by Booklist as “what may be the most gripping and engrossing thriller this reviewer has ever read in almost 50 years of thriller reading.”
